The Problem With Race Lotteries

By Fitfulfocus @fitfulfocus

Refresh. Refresh. Refresh. Bah. Nada.

I’m sitting at my computer, obsessively updating my email inbox. Each time my phone vibrates, I snatch it up like cookie fresh out of the oven (because, ya know, the inbox on my phone will be different from the inbox on my computer… all logic is lost!) Bah. It’s just any old email. Why can’t it be THE email.

This was me all day yesterday as I waited for an email from New York Road Runners, confirming or denying me entry into the NYC Half Marathon. This was also me earlier this year as I waited to find out if I got into the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in DC. And this is the problem with entering race lotteries. They make ya a crazy person!

You enter months ahead of time and forget all about it for a while. Then comes the day of the drawing and all hell breaks loose on the anxiety front. My friend heard that some people found out they got into the race before even getting an email because their credit card was charged. Cue me checking my bank statement every 10 minutes hour.

“Come onnnnn,” you whine like your inner child, “I wanna knowwwww.”

Other people start to get their acceptance emails. You’re convinced you didn’t get it. It’s all over. It’s like waiting for your college acceptance letter to arrive. What if you don’t get in?! Life as you know it will be over. Ok… that’s a bit melodramatic… but just a bit.

Vibrate. Oh maybe that’s it. Damn. It’s just another awesome sale from Quest. Why, Quest, why do you tease me so? But ok… I’ll take some Quest Bars. And some protein powder. And some… ah! A vibrate! Refresh. Check. Bah. Still nothing.

New York Road Runners, please oh please put me out of my misery. I so want to run the NYC Half…

Finally, at 7pm, the email arrived…

Boooo!!! Life as I know it is overrrrrrr. Ok… I got that out of my system. I’m bummed I didn’t get in. This was my first ever race and I really wanted to run it again. Whelp, I’ll just have to find another race. There’s always next year, right?!

Truth. What it’s like for a runner the day of a race lottery drawing. #runnerproblems
