The Jump Rope Burpee

By Fitfulfocus @fitfulfocus

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and comments on yesterday’s post. I’m so happy to hear that you all know when to listen to your bodies and take a break from working out when need be. I’m also happy to hear that I’m not alone in needing a little rest every now and then.

After my week off from working out, I was itching to get in a good sweat. Saturday was a beautiful day, so I thought I’d head to the park for a CrossFit inspired HIIT workout and to practice my jump rope skills.

When I arrived at the park, I thought I’d warm up with the jump rope, but after a few jumps I realized my rope was far too short for me. I can’t remember where I got this rope, but I obviously hadn’t used it (bad fitness blogger). Luckily, there was a jump rope class going on right next to me (well hello there, amazing coincidence). One of the girls saw me struggling and lent me a more fitting rope.

As I was going about my workout (which was comprised of jump rope, “box” jumps on a big step, ab work, lunges, and burpees), I noticed that the girl that lent me a rope was pretty darn good at the whole jump rope thing. When I went to return her rope, I thought hmm… I wonder if this girl could help me with my mission to conquer the double under. Sooo I asked!

Low and behold, this girl isn’t just any girl, she’s a jump rope pro! Her name is Bernadette Robinson, and she’s apparently ridiculously well known for her jump rope skills. Check out some of her moves!

When I asked her if she had any tips for double unders, she said, “I’ll have you doing double unders in less than 15 minutes.”

Fast forward 2 minutes. Seriously. 2 minutes, and I was doing them!! I’m so excited! She even had me start trying cross overs! I was like a kid on the playground!

Before we parted ways, she said had one thing left to teach me. The conversation went a little something like this:

Bernadette: I saw you like burpees.
Me: I wouldn’t go so far as to say I like them, but I do them.
Bernadette: I see your shirt.
Me: Ha! Well I thought it said slurpees… (I was wearing this shirt, FYI)
Bernadette: Well… have you ever done a jump rope burpee?
Me: Ah what now?

And then we were doing this:

I know, right?! That’s a whole new level of burpee.

Basically, you jump over the rope and then jump back into plank position and do a burpee. I was doing one solid jump, then jumping over and back into a burpee. I can’t wait to work this into workout plans for you all. Bwahaha.

I’m currently helping Bernadette out with her media kit in exchange for some jump rope lessons, so stay tuned for more jumping adventures and tips for when I become a double under master!

That’s Bernadette next to me!
