DNA kits are all the rage right now and I've been dying to try one! Certain genes can uncover your ancestry, report on predispositions to health concerns, and even tell you what type of diet and exercise program is right for you. Even more fun? Vinome uses DNA testing to help you pick out the perfect wine. As a wino, I had to give it a shot.
Here's how it works. Our genes dictate unique physical characteristics like hair or eye color, but they also strongly influence how we perceive different smells and tastes. It's the reason I find cilantro refreshing, but my husband finds it soapy, for example.
Knowing whether you prefer earthy versus bright or tart versus sweet will help you figure out your wine preferences. Once Vinome has captured your unique genetic makeup, you can shop in the Vinome store or join the club and have exclusive selections hand picked by the Vinome team... all of which are recommended based on your individual flavor profile.
To start, simply order the DNA kit from Vinome.com and register at Helix.com/start, where you are taken through a quick introduction on how to properly provide the DNA sample. You must also take a short "smell and taste" survey on Vinome's website to complete the process and gain an even deeper perspective on which wines you'll prefer.
Once your kit arrives, it takes only a few minutes to register online, then you'll need to collect your DNA sample. Make sure not to eat or drink 30 minutes prior to doing this or the results won't be accurate. This is the gross part: you'll need to fill the tube with your saliva and properly seal it.

Once you've sealed it and placed it in the pre-labeled envelope, it's ready to be sent to the lab for testing. It takes 6-8 weeks to get the results back. So did they get it right?
