Your Bad Internship Experiences

Dearest HTBJ readers,

I started this blog because I was miserable in my jobless, hopeless existence, and I realised no one in the real world gave a damn about my struggle. They reported figures that said we were screwed and went on with their days. They told us our generation was doomed and had a coffee. They invented a “grey area” in the law of low and unpaid work and told us falling behind on rent is how you get ahead in your career. They didn’t care about what we were going through.

But now, “they” are going to hear from us.

I’ve been approached by Guardian Weekend and asked to seek out and write the stories of people who’ve been treated badly during an internship. I know you’re out there. I’m one of you. And I’d love to speak to you about it.

You don’t have to name the company and you can remain absolutely anonymous.

We’ve all heard internship anecdotes on the grapevine, but no one’s telling them publicly. They know we struggle financially

to break into the industries we worked so hard to be qualified for – what they don’t know is how badly some of us are treated on the long way up. This is our chance to tell the world. The wannabes are finally being handed a megaphone! HEAR YE, HEAR YE, AS AN INTERN I WAS GIVEN A DESK IN THE KITCHEN AND FORCED TO DO THE BOSS’S DAUGHTER’S HOMEWORK! (For example)
