I always learn something from Kathy at BermudaOnion’s Wondrous Words Wednesday. The vocabulary she shares has me learning new words each week and paying more attention to the words I don’t know in my reading. In the past I would just figure out what a word meant based on the context of the sentence but I’ve since started looking up words in the dictionary – it’s kind of cool when I’m on my Kindle and I can highlight a word and the dictionary automatically comes up and tells me the definition. I also downloaded a free dictionary app to my phone that has been getting quite a bit of use from my reading. So below are a few words I’ve had to look up recently ~ have you ever heard of these?
Zoroastrianism
n. a monotheistic pre-Islamic religion of ancient Persia founded by Zoroaster in the 6th century BC. According to the teachings of Zoroaster, the supreme god, named Ahura Mazda, created twin spirits, one of which chose truth and light, the other untruth and darkness. Later writings present a more dualistic cosmology in which the struggle is between Ahura Mazda and the evil spirit Ahriman. The scriptures of Zoroastrianism are the Zend-Avesta. The language survives in isolated areas of Iran and in India, where its followers are known as Parsees.
The Church of Satan is one of three organizations worshipping the Devil; however there is another religion much older and steeped in history called Zoroastrianism.
