A fair few years back, the name Laura White might have meant a bit more than what it currently does. This is because she was one of the favourites to win the X Factor, but was sensationally sent out of the show prematurely and has, since then, not made her career in singing ... but in penning tracks for huge name. Now, she has come back to the other side to showcase her talents as both a singer and a songwriter and, despite her past being on The X Factor, you can tell she is a talented woman, capable of great things.
The first thing you'll notice about Laura in To Be Loves, is that her vocal is by no means conventional, but is by no means something we haven't heard before either. She has twinges and twangs of many people from Joss Stone to Amy Winehouse and, although it is used in a very different genre, her voice carries beautifully quite like the people it can be compared to.
Her piano playing ability is totally on point here. This simple little love song is something that is easy enough for people to comprehend, but not outrageous enough to annoy an audience ... meaning that, even if it is our favorite instrument, this song is absolutely stunning and something that the likes of Adele would have been proud to have done.
We worry for Laura, as we believe that this sort of thing isn't what will be showcased to the masses. The fact that her vocal possesses incredible and mesmerising capabilities, and the fact that her playing is beyond beauty ... doesn't really mean all that much in the conventional music industry of today and, without a song that packs a punch in terms of percussion, beats and bass, we don't know that she will make much out of this EP
We'd like to think that she will be the knew name on the block, though, we reckon it might be worth her allowing a producer like Naughty Boy to tweak her tracks like this to add a little bit of oomph and awe about them ... meaning she could easily be on par with the likes of Emeli Sande.
