An unlikely couple must decide what truly defines family.

Gentry Cabot’s rebellious life comes to a screeching halt when a one-night stand leads to a sobering new reality: motherhood. Exhausted and overwhelmed, the former wild child struggles to raise an infant on her own. After a lifetime of feeling like the odd Cabot out, Gentry knows that what her son needs most is family. For his sake, she plans to rebuild bridges with them, but first she needs a little help on the home front.

Humanitarian worker Ian Crawford has devoted his life to service. Forced to temporarily return stateside, he’s eager to head back to Haiti to expand the nonprofit he just founded in his late father’s honor. He can’t do that without money, so when Gentry offers a hefty paycheck for a short-term gig as a live-in nanny, he can’t afford to say no. Ian expects to deal with a barrage of privileged problems. What he doesn’t expect is how quickly being a makeshift father transforms him.

Despite his growing attachment to Gentry and her child, Ian still has his dreams, and Gentry wants a full-time dad for her son. When the baby’s father reenters the picture, will Gentry and Ian embrace the family they’ve formed or end up worlds apart?

Every so often, BookSparks decides to have a “pop up” book tour and if you are lucky, they include you by sending you a copy of a book to read and review as part of the tour. I was lucky enough to get today’s book, When You Knew by Jamie Beck, as part of one of those pop up book tours!

When You Knew is the third book the in the Cabot Family series.  I haven’t read the first two books, but this book did serve as a stand alone. I’m betting had I read the other two books, I would know the characters in this story a lot better, so maybe I’ll go back in my spare time and read the first two.

The book’s protagonist is Gentry, the younger half sister of Hunter and Colby Cabot.  Folks consider Gentry to be the spoiled wild child in the family – a single and unwed mother.  Gentry is struggling with her colicky newborn and she really needs to get back to work and needs child care desperately.  A friend of her sister-in-law, Ian, steps up to fill the void and becomes the temporary nanny.

When Gentry’s “baby daddy” shows up, will Ian simply walk away or will he fight for what he wants? On the surface, it would seem that Gentry and Ian have little in common, but if readers look closely, they’ll realize that they both have the same kinds of hurts they’re both trying to nurse.

Author, Jamie Beck is definitely a master at putting together a complex plot comprised of relatable characters and true and realistic conflict. Her characters have “real life” emotional depth and their dialog is believable. I found myself laughing and crying while I read this book.

When You Knew is a story about learning that you have to do what’s right for your family and not what the general public thinks is right. By seeking the approval of others, you might be disappointed.  Ian and Gentry’s journey was a “tug of war” of whether or not their being together is ultimately the best choice for themselves and each other.

When You Knew by Jamie Beck Besides being a fellow Steeler’s fan, National bestselling author Jamie Beck’s realistic and heartwarming stories have sold more than two million copies. She is a Booksellers’ Best Award and National Readers’ Choice Award finalist, and critics at Kirkus, Publishers Weekly (including a starred review), and Booklist have respectively called her work “smart,” “uplifting,” and “entertaining.” In addition to writing novels, she enjoys dancing around the kitchen while cooking and hitting the slopes in Vermont and Utah.

Above all, she is a grateful wife and mother to a very patient, supportive family. When she’s not not writing, you can find her dancing around her kitchen while cooking, and hitting the slopes in Vermont and Utah.
