What to Read This Week (Double Dose)

Rules of Civility by Amor Towles: Katey Kontent is living in New York in 1938What to Read This Week (Double Dose) and decides she wants to be more than just a secretary, so she and best friend Eve decide it’s time to take on the city.  And we know when two best friends decide to “take on” New York it usually means they’re looking for men, status, and glittering lights.  But there’s more to this book than that, as our heroine finds more than just shiny things in NYC and is forced to navigate through perils and faux pas.

What to Read This Week (Double Dose)
Madame Tussaud by Michelle Moran: Told from the perspective of sculptor Madame Tussaud this novel explores the terrors of the French Revolution.  I’ve had this book on my to-read list for a couple years now but have yet to make the plunge to actually read it.  I like the French Revolution, and the perspective sounds interesting, but something about it just keeps me moving it to the bottom of the list.  I guess it’s time to just knock this one out and see if it was worth the wait.

You Know When the Men are Gone by Siobhan Fallon: Set on the Fort

What to Read This Week (Double Dose)
Hood Army Base this “army” novel takes a look at what goes on from the wives’ perspectives once the men have left.  The uniqueness of this novel is what appealed to me and the fact that Fallon is a military wife herself means that she has a unique knowledge of the topic she’s writing about.

What to Read This Week (Double Dose)
Joyland by Stephen King: Just released this Tuesday in paperback Joyland is set in 1973 North Carolina.  At an amusement park.  Sounds creepy right?  While, this King novel isn’t meant to be totally horrific, rooting itself more in the mystery/thriller side of things.  But you’ve got a vicious murder, a dying child, and a few spooks.  Going back to his childhood love of paperback novels this one is only going to be released in paperback for a while, so my kindle is going to have to sit this one out.

Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns by Lauren Weisberger: I know

What to Read This Week (Double Dose)
there are plenty of the literati set that would be ashamed to see this book on my to-read list…but I couldn’t care less.  I really enjoyed Weisberger’s first novel The Devil Wears Prada all those years ago before it was a movie, and when I saw her new novel out (also released on June 4th) I was excited.  Andy Sachs and Emily start a highend bridal magazine and Andy’s wedding to new character Harrison (a Charming stereotype if ever there was) will be splashed across society pages except there’s a catch…  Now, Andy Sachs doesn’t sound like the same character and she’s obviously not chasing quality journalism anymore…but I don’t care.  It sounds like fun.

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill: Well, like father like son, I couldn’t resist adding Hill’s latest novel to my to-read list (I even bought the hardcover edition…because I had like 50%off coupons from B&N).  I’ll be honest, I just really like the cover, I want to see someone with this license plate on their car. A nice collection of characters.  Manx is a man who likes children…or rather, to take them for rides in his flashy car to a dangerous and terrifying playground.  But Vic McQueen escaped and had a son…a son Manx is desperate to get his hands on.
