What The Vagus Nerve Is And How To Stimulate It!

WAYS TO STIMULATE VAGUS NERVE

A sharp light flashes on the face and our eyes close and the face responds to that light by contracting its muscles. All these are responses of the body towards external stimuli. But how do our bodies react? What is the agent involved in it? What is accountable for our body's response to all these stimuli? Our whole body is controlled in two ways: the hormonal system which is the endocrine system and the neurological system.

What The Vagus Nerve Is And How To Stimulate It!

ACTIVITIES CONTROLLED BY THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

This system monitors almost all the actions of the body by sending out hormones and these hormones act as forerunners and bring about the necessary result. These hormones are expelled from diversified glands present in the body which are present nearly in every fraction of the body.

It governs almost all activities that are metabolic activities, development of the body, behavior, circadian rhythm, sexual development. All the glands in the body secrete hormones and bring significant change in the body but some major glands that play crucial roles are the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal glands, pineal body, ovaries, and testes. The hypothalamus plays an incredibly crucial role by correlating the actions of the endocrine and nervous systems.

MECHANISM OF ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

The activities are carried out by expelling signaling molecules which are known as hormones. The hormones are assembled of different chemical arrangements and are of three types, they are steroid hormones, hormones that have amino derivatives, and hormones that are water-soluble and have lengthy chains of amino acids. Each type of hormone has a specific character that enables it to act on the receptors which are present at different sites of the cell. Hormones ordinance on cells in two ways one is it acts directly and another way is by producing an auxiliary messenger.

ACTIVITIES CONTROLLED BY NEURAL SYSTEM

Every collaborative activity in our body or the activities we carry out is the outcome of the actions of our nervous system. Everything, starting from thoughts, feelings we experience, the ability to recollect things in the past, things we learn, movements we carry out, heartbeat, breathing, sexual functions, growth, metabolism, functioning of every organ, and even, the activities of the minute cells in the body is dependent on the nervous system. The stimulus is passed on from one part to another part through the nerves and the action is seen to happen.

PARTS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

When we talk about the nervous system, it is the protagonist in the body and governs almost all the actions. Brain and spinal cord are the main divisions. They are further divided into forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. The peripheral system is divided into two as autonomic and somatic. These contain nerves that carry the stimuli so that response can be carried out in the assisted region. Every action is carried out with precision.

ACTIVITIES OF CRANIAL NERVES

Before knowing about the activities of Cranial nerves, let's know what it is. These act as association of brain to other parts of the body and are 12 pairs. They are the olfactory nerve, optic nerve, oculomotor nerve, trochlear nerve, Trigeminal nerve, Abducens nerve, facial nerve, Vestibular nerve, Glossopharyngeal nerve, Vagus nerve, Accessory nerve, and Hypoglossal nerve. The nerves perceive a stimulus and carry out the required action in the body. The smell sensation is transmitted to the brain via the olfactory nerve and the same way the optic nerve transmits sensation related to vision. The Oculomotor nerve is motor in nature, it controls the four muscles around the eye and the pupil according to the stimuli. The actions of muscles are also controlled by one more nerve and that is trochlear. The trigeminal nerve is the vastest among these nerves and has three divisions that are ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular. And the action is related to the respective parts. Muscles of the eyes are also controlled by Abducens. The facial nerve is both sensory as well as motor and it governs the actions of muscles of the face. The vestibulocochlear nerve has actions that are related to hearing as well as the balance of the body. The motor and sensory activities of the glossopharyngeal nerve govern muscles in the throat and detect taste. The Vagus nerve is very unique, it is both motor and sensory. It controls muscles in the throat, abdomen, etc. The accessory nerve innervates the muscles of the throat and brings about the actions and the last nerve which is hypoglossal assists in the activity of the tongue. The coordinated actions of these nerves help in the proper functioning of each part of the body.

WAYS TO ACTIVATE VAGUS NERVE

The Vagus is the 10th nerve and is very diverse. It is one of the most important and longest nerves. It branches out from the brain and reaches the gut and brings out the actions. Activating the vagus nerves helps in maintaining a good and healthy life. It can be done through:

  1. Meditation: While doing deep breaths meditation it stimulates the vagus nerve when exhale is longer than the inhalation.
  2. Yoga: Doing yoga increases the motility of the gastric pathway and the movement of abdominal muscles.
  3. Exposure to cold activates this nerve.
  4. Maintaining a healthy diet is important to maintain the good functioning of the vagal nerve as conditions such as obesity disrupt it.
  5. Healthy bowel movements as constipation and other conditions can hinder the actions of the vagus nerve.
  6. Doing activities that soothe your mind such as singing and listening to music. And even chanting and humming.
  7. Doing fasting and laying dietary restrictions stimulates the vagus nerve.
  8. Avoid food that causes inflammation in the abdominal region such as the excess animal protein that can decrease the activity of the vagus nerve.
  9. Avoid the use of excess sugar in the diet as excess usage can cause inflammation.
  10. Doing massage in the foot region, scalp and ears stimulate the vagus nerve.
