You say that like it’s a bad thing. What’s wrong with that? I am far Left socialist and I’m critical of America too. Any sane American ought to be.
What is Dissent Magazine? It’s just a bunch of leftwing Jewish intellectual eggheads from back East who broke with the rest of the Left a while back because they said the Left was too radical, so they broke to the Right. There were some huge fights with those guys and the rest of the Left a while back.
The Dissent crowd said the Left should not support or even tolerate Communist dictatorships, and the rest of the Left says we are going to support them anyway. The Dissent group are Democratic Socialists with a capital D who hate authoritarian Communists. And Communism may not have been the only thing they went rightwing on. I seem to think there were other things, but I forget.
Dissent used to be run by some really radical Jews for a long time, but then they drifted to the Right as a lot of radical US Jews did over time. See the rise of the neoconservatives (former Trotskyites) for example.
Dissent is on the Right of the Left, I guess you could say. A lot of people on the Left still hate Dissent and say the Dissent crowd is a bunch of rightwingers. But the Dissent folks insist that they are still on the Left, and they want very much to be respected by the others.
Personally, I like that magazine a lot.
