What is Coffee?

By Coffee Kaki @askcoffeekaki

Coffee that is served in various cup sizes and with different amount of milk, is called by the names like Cappuccino, Latte, Espresso, Macchiato, Piccolo, Irish Coffee and so on. Some may describe the coffee based on types of coffee beans. So what is coffee actually?

How it looks in reality, the actual coffee tree is about 30 feet tall covered with waxy green leaves. On the branches will be cherry-looking fruits. Ahh.... Those are raw coffee cherries. Normally these trees can live up to 20-30 years and it grows in different climate and altitude. As long as there's no sudden fluctuation in temperature, they will do fine.

When a person consumes coffee, it changes the way the brain and body work and changes how someone behaves and feels. The chemical compound in coffee is called: "Caffeine", stimulates central nervous system which includes the brain, spinal cord, and the other nerves in the body. Caffeine's main effect on the body is to make a person feels more awake and alert for a while. After drinking caffeine, it usually reaches its peak level in the blood within one hour and stays there for four 4-6 hours. Caffeine increases the release of acid in the stomach, sometimes leading to an upset stomach or "heartburn." (I kind of get that sometimes...)

Also, caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it makes the body lose more water. So, drinks that contain caffeine aren't good for quenching thirst. The next time of coffee, be extra mindful to drink extra water to stay hydrated.

Caffeine doesn't make a drunk person sober or fit to drive - it does not get rid of the effects of alcohol.
