What Does It Mean To Be A Contributor?

By Bren @Virtual_Bren

My Girly Parts

If you’ve been in the blogging world for any period of time, I’m sure you’ve run across Guest posts and/or Contributor posts. But what’s the difference? Is there a difference?

For all intents and purposes, I’m going to define the difference between becoming a Contributor on My Girly Parts versus being a Guest.

Contributor

Become a Contributor on My Girly Parts

A Contributor is defined as “A person who contributes/furnishes works for publication. A Subscriber.”

My definition is “A person who is a member of a group/community that furnishes works for publications routinely.”

When you become a Contributor to My Girly Parts there are Guidelines that you must adhere too. Here are a few:

  1. You must be a Subscriber to My Girly Parts.
  2. You must be a Consistent Commenter with at least five (5) comments.
  3. You must be able to provide original content of no less than 350 words on a monthly basis.

To become a Contributor on My Girly Parts is to join the Team. You will be solely responsible for your content and for replying to comments. Being I am not the author of the post, I don’t feel it is my position to reply to comments unless I am addressed by the Commenter.

This is where I see a difference on some sites and where I believe the difference lies between Contributor versus Guest.

If you following In The Powder Room or The Indie Chicks, this is exactly what you will see. A team of writers submitted content to the blog/website.

Guest

MGP now accepts Guest Submissions

Guest is defined as “A person who is unfamiliar. A Stranger.”

My definition, as far as MGP is concerned, is “A person who is unfamiliar with a community. A Visitor.”

I follow many sites that have Guest posts and honestly, it is their choice on how they define others who will furnish content to their sites.

The difference between Contributor and Guest lies at the sole discretion of the site owner.

My Girly Parts Policy

Our mission is to build of Community of like-minded individuals, whether it be female or male. By building a Community, we are asking for individuals to Subscribe to MGP and to share with us via Comments on this site as well as on other social media networks. A Community, in my eyes, equals a Team. Community Members support one another just like Team Members do.

This is why it is important that we distinguish between Contributor and Guest.

Addition to our Policy

I’ve been contact by many people asking if they can submit content to My Girly Parts. I always refer them to the Guidelines to Become a Contributor to see if they are eligible. Sometimes, they do not meet the requirements. Recently, I agreed to allow a Guest post. This is someone who does not meet the Guidelines of becoming a Contributor yet I found their suggested content to be of interest to me as well as our Community.

Thus, I am adding a new policy for Guest posts to My Girly Parts.

A Guest will not have the same rights or access that a Contributor does. Remember, a Contributor is a “Team member”.

A Guest will be allowed to submit content to My Girly Parts under the New Guidelines listed at Article Submissions.

With the new guidelines in place, I hope to grow the My Girly Parts Community and allow more folks to share their life experiences with us.

Over to you

Do you distinguish between Guests and Contributors on your site(s)? If so, care to share with us below? If not, do you see that it’s really just a play on words versus giving more “power” to dedicated Contributors versus Guests?

I would love to hear your thoughts.
