Wedding Vows; Speak from the Heart

Finally, the day came when he went down on one knee and opened that velvet box containing the promise of a future. You have imagined it so many times, catching you in unguarded moments.

What is more heartwarming than thoughts about weddings is actually planning and envisioning your own dream wedding. You can explore different scenarios and themes. After all, imagination has no limits.  But this time you have the chance to make it into reality. There are so many details to look into but let’s not forget one of the most important things – your wedding vows.

Not all  ceremonies have personal exchange of wedding vows. Ask your local registrar for marriage requirements and get your papers in order.  Check with your officiating pastor, priest or rabbi, or whoever is in charge in your church so you’ll know if personalized vows are welcome. Having your own vows during the ceremony will make things more personal, heartfelt, and memorable.

Here are some tips to help you out:

·   Examine your heart. Ask yourself some questions like what has drawn you to him in the first place and what has kept you there all these times.  Is it his sense of humor, flexibility and great capacity to care?  Whatever warms your heart, let it be your guide.

·   Compose in your mind and in writing. You will find that words come easily on paper when you have time to gather your thoughts. You can inject some romantic poetry, memorable quote, or a bit of humor into it, but try not to go overboard by being too sentimental or emotional. Write something that won’t make you cry so much and ruin your great make up.

·   Keep it personal and original. Make your vows personal and original so your beloved will appreciate it for your candor and sincerity. Don’t copy some vow you found online with generic wordings that your guests may have heard of somewhere. It doesn’t have to be a well-written piece with profound words and deep vocabulary. This is your wedding and not a speaking engagement so make it simple yet personal.

·   Don’t chat up a storm. There’s no best time than the present to talk and confirm what you like about each other.  Some odd bits of happenings or humorous incidents may resurfaced that would form part of both your marriage vows. That would lighten the ceremony and touch the hearts of your guests. As much as you would like to share many anecdotes, this is still a wedding ceremony so keep it short and focused. A catchy vow would hold the interest and attention of your audience.  A long winding one might lose its flow along the way and not be able to highlight the essential message.

·   Listen to yourself. Imagine standing by the altar, gazing at your loved one, and speaking in front of so many guests. Be careful as you may stumble with your words.  Say it clear with composure and grace. Be comfortable with your words so practice and commit to memory.

Finally, enjoy the blessed time.  Writing your wedding vows is a time to reflect and anticipate the big wedding day.  Write your dreams and hopes for such lifetime commitment and savor the moment.
