Wash Your Car the GREEN Way

Posted on the 30 August 2012 by T_mackinnon @tedmackinnon

Many consumers invest a great deal of time and money into incorporating environmentally friendly products and practices into their home. Green cleaning is especially popular nowadays because it keeps harmful chemicals out of the household – which in turn cuts down on the amount of chemicals flowing down drains into waterways. But green cleaning supplies and practices aren’t only for the home; you can take your green efforts one step further by using them for your car.

Keeping your car clean isn’t just about aesthetic appeal. In climates with snowy winters, keeping your car clean and free of road salt can prolong the life of your vehicle. Most people probably haven’t given a lot of thought to how they wash they cars, but making a few simple changes can reduce your overall impact on the environment.

  • DIY versus commercial car washes. When it comes to water conservation and the use of biodegradable car cleaners, most automatic car washes win the competition over typical car washing practices. Car washes tend to use half the water you would use to wash your car with your backyard hose. Look for car washes that use high-pressure systems rather than automated brushes, which if not properly maintained could cause damage to your car.
  • Green washing solutions. There are biodegradable car washing solutions you can purchase for washing your car, but you can also protect the environment and your car’s finish while saving money. A homemade solution using half white vinegar and half water will get your entire car exterior clean, from the windows to the paint. Clean the vinyl interior and restore its luster with a mixture made of half vinegar and half jojoba or olive oil.
  • Use the right supplies. Paper towels and disposable car cleaning cloths aren’t good for the environment, and some paper towels are so rough they might scratch your car. And while you may be tempted to reuse old T-shirts or other fabrics when washing your car, they may be harmful to your car’s finish. Use only materials that are recommended for cars.
  • Environmentally friending washing and rinsing techniques. Where you wash your car is just as important as how. Park your car on the grass to avoid having the cleansing solution run off and into the sewer system. Reduce water usage for washing and rinsing by filling a bucket twice with the vinegar and water washing solution, then two to three times more to rinse the car. Start at the top for more efficient rinsing.

It all comes out in the wash

A car is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your life. Caring for it properly helps you enjoy your vehicle for a longer amount of time. Green car care practices may seem like something that’s done merely for the environment, but it’s clear they also have a positive impact on the condition and value of your vehicle. Use these eco-friendly car washing tips each time you clean your pride and joy; the next time you ride off into the sunset, you’ll know your green practices are helping to preserve the world around you and the car that takes you there.
