The model was calmly posing, and I arrived late at the first session: as all the easels position were already occupied by other students, I was left with a challenging contrejour profile.
The difficulty here was the light and the background : our tutor had - this time - selected a creamy green background - it was hard to mark contrasts in the painting and in the portrait. Yet, with the late October gray sky over London, what contrasts can we find, smooth melancholy rather than absolute drama.
