Vembanad Lake is one of the finest tourist destinations in the southern state of India. It is the longest lake in India and also the largest lake in Kerala. It is even considered to be one of the largest lakes in the country. The lake stretches over several districts of Kerala and is known with diverse names in diverse locality, such as Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad and Kochi Lake in Kochi. The first prime minister of India after independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Kerala in the year 1952. He was given a warm and hearty welcome by the people of the state. On his visit to this southern state of India, he was escorted in a snake boat. After experiencing the thrill of traveling on a snake boat, the prime minister dedicated a rolling trophy to the winner of the snake boat race. The trophy presented to the winner of this race is a replica of the snake boat in sliver, which is placed on a wooden stand. People from all over India and even foreign tourists come to witness this exciting boat race, which is organized in the month of August, every year. Participants from different villages come to participate in this race and they take it as honor if they win the race. Vembanad Lake is also popular as a perfect picnic spot and is also considered as one of the fascinating backwater destinations in the region of Kerala. This lake covers an area of about 80 km and the banks of this lake is beautifully dotted with evergreen forests and coconut trees, which is a home to diverse species of birds. The lake is popular among the tourists for its lush green surroundings, captivating boat cruises, fishing and sightseeing tours. Apart from all these, the Vembanad Lake is known for the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, which is placed on the eastern banks of the lake.
