Owning a home is part process and part procedure. Aside from the fact that the home is where one lives, raises a family and spends quality time; it is an investment and one that requires ongoing attention to the systems and components of the house itself. This is highly important as paying close attention to issues with a house can help maintain property values and preserve the quality of the home. One of the most complex and necessary systems in a house is the plumbing. This is because small issues can quickly become major concerns when it comes to pipes and plumbing. A few useful plumbing tips can be helpful for homeowners to help ensure plumbing issues are kept at bay or corrected before they turn in to major concerns.

Use Common Sense

One tip to keep pipes free and clear of clogs is to use a little common sense and to err on the side of caution. This boils down to never putting anything down drains that is not liquid or small enough to flow freely through pipes. This is highly important as far too often people put things down sink drains, shower drains and even toilets that then cause slow flowing water due to clogs.

Garbage Disposals Are Not For Everything

There is a misconception that a garbage disposal can handle anything. This is not true and when the wrong items are placed in the disposal, they are not pulverized enough and thus they too can quickly cause slow draining pipes and clogs. It is always wise to put large chunks of food in to trash or composting containers and save the garbage disposal for the little bits of residue and food stuck on plates and dishes.

Dishwasher Need a Little TLC

A good tip to keep plumbing in the kitchen area, and thus the whole house, operating as it should is to baby the dishwasher. This means always rinsing as much off of plates and cups and pans before placing in the dishwasher, running a cleaner through the dishwasher once per month and paying attention for signs that things may need repaired. One of the top indicators that something is not right is pooled water at the bottom of a dishwasher.

Know Who To Call

Though using a few key tips to prevent plumbing issues works for most small issues that come about, not every plumbing emergency or problem can be prevented. Pipes get old, rust forms in bends and other issues come about that warrant the use of a trained plumber for repair work. This is always the right move as plumbing can cause costly repairs if a failed attempt to correct an issue is tried by a homeowner and issues left go can result in burst pipes that flood basements, rooms and other areas of the home. Plumbing is a complex and integrated system that runs throughout a whole house and thus when something is wrong, or even suspected to be wrong, it is imperative a professional is brought in to assess and correct the situation.
