Once you leave Barratti and go south, you almost immediately arrive in Populonia:
This is the only Etruscan city that was situated at the sea, specialized in the smelting of iron. The walls around it date from medieval times, whereas the fortifications were built in the 15th century.
The first thing you see when you arrive are overcrowded parking lots, because it is forbidden to drive in the small town. Populonia itself is built on a hill.
The town is very charming with its narrow streets, art galleries, souvenir shops and a restaurant.
Populonia is very popular with Italians themselves who like to come here during the weekends for a nice stroll and a glass of wine in the restaurant, which is located right next to the town gate.
