People with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) often feel so tired that they can’t do even half of their normal daily activities — and the feeling doesn’t go away, even with more rest. It may last a month, a couple of years, or many years. Sometimes symptoms may come and go.
Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
The main symptom of CFS is severe fatigue that lasts for 6 months or more. You also have at least four of these other symptoms:
- Feeling unwell for more than 24 hours after physical activity
- Muscle pain
- Memory problems
- Headaches
- Pain in multiple joints
- Sleep problems
- Sore throat
- Tender lymph nodes
Who Is At Risk?
CFS affects men and women of all ages and races. It occurs in women at two to four times the rate as in men. CFS is most common in people in their 40s and 50s, but children can develop the illness, especially during the teen years.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome’s Related Illness: Fibromyalgia
CFS’s sister illness, fibromyalgia, is characterized by muscle pain — sometimes all over the body, or sometimes only in specific areas. These painful areas can be transient or persistent. For most sufferers, CFS and Fibromyalgia are the same illness. However, some people have fatigue without pain, whereas others have pain without fatigue.
How Chiropractic Can Help Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
The health of the spine is a crucial factor in ensuring the correct functioning of the body’s nervous system. When the nervous system is jeopardized due to subluxations in any part of the spine, the effects can be disastrous. We know this is true because Chronic Fatigue Syndrome rarely exists in a vacuum; patients suffering from the disease usually have concurrent health issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Fibromyalgia.
The central nervous system coordinates all of the activities of the body and is comprised of the brain, which is protected by the skull, and the spinal cord. The spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae, or bones, of the spine. When the spine is not in proper alignment, the entire central nervous system is affected, including the autonomic nervous system, which is part of the nervous system that controls the involuntary functions of the body.
In addition to nervous system disorder, a misaligned spine is also an inefficient one. This may lead to further fatigue and strain. When the vertebrae, sacrum, hips, and pelvis are positioned correctly, less energy is required to support the body. In particular, the shape of the cervical spine (the neck) is important. When the neck is misaligned, the weight of the head (normally ten to 14 pounds) increases exponentially. Carrying this added burden can create or aggravate exhaustion.
