Tomato Pappu (Andra Style Tomato-pigeon Peas Stew)

Andra is very famous for its array of pappu stews (stew made of toor dal). For me a complete meal always means some kind of dal along with a stir fry and steamed rice.So its no wonder I often borrow recipes from neighboring states to just overcome the boredom of eating same kind of stew.I have already posted a recipe for tomato stew,with pepper powder and that cannot be called as typical Andra style.Recently I made this tomato pappu that I had eaten in Andra meals and do I need to say I just loved it :)Steaming hot rice,ghee and this spicy gravy is enough to keep you going for hours.Seriously a comforting meal:). Tomato pappu
Star ingredients:Toor dal(pigeon peas) and tomatoes
Time:20 minutes:
Serves:3
Ingredients:
1 cup toor dal
2 large tomatoes
2 green chillies
1 red chilli
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon asafoetida
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 small piece of ginger
Salt
Oil
10-12 curry leaves
Cilantro for garnishing
Method:
1.Pressure cook toor dal up tp 4 whistles.It should be soft and mushy
2.Chop the tomatoes finely.
3.In a kadai heat some oil and add all the ingredients from green chillies through ginger and temper.

Tomato pappu (Andra style tomato-pigeon peas stew)5.Add the mashed dal/1/2 cup water,salt and mix well.Let it boil for 7-10 minutes.

6.Garnish with cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice.

Notes:
1.You can add onions along with tomatoes
2.Instead of asafoetida add 3-4 gralic cloves while tempering
3.You can puree the tomatoes for a smooth gravy
