While at Comic-Con 2016, Holland discussed what’s new and different in the upcoming film. While some fans are slightly nervous about the prospects of a third Spider-Man in decade to hit the big screen, Holland offered his assurances that this Spidey would be unlike anything ever seen on film.
Holland told Collider the following:
“This is a very different side to Spider-Man because you’re going to see a kid dealing with everyday problems that a 15-year-old deals with as well as trying to save the city. He’s conflicted because of what it is he’s trying to do and what it is that’s going on with the whole Avengers in the universe. Obviously after Civil War we still don’t really know what’s happening and he’s in the middle of that world. So that’s very exciting to explore that and also just to see a kid in high school figure out what to do with his super powers is really fun.”
While both previous cinematic iterations of Spider-Man have featured the character in high school, neither Tobey Maguire nor Andrew Garfield’s take relied on the adolescent drama that propelled the character’s early days in the comics. The high school aspects were glossed over in favor of superhero action, and it will be interesting to see how well Marvel balances the two sides of Peter Parker’s character as the new series unfolds. As far as that characterization goes, Holland had this to say:
“We’re trying to bring it down to its bare bones and make the most realistic version of a superhero movie we can possibly make. And that means watching him fill up his web cartridges and watching him run out of web and reload, and all sorts of stuff. It’s so cool and such an amazing story to explore…it’s a dream come true.”
One of the intriguing parts of Peter’s character his intelligence and how he uses those intellectual gifts to grow into the role of Spider-Man over time. While the previous series never neglected the importance of his intelligence, from the sound of things Homecoming will use this as part of his evolution. In the comic book’s early years, Spider-Man was plagued by the kind of adolescent angst familiar to many as he attempted to get comfortable in the dual roles of teenager and hero. He made plenty of mistakes along the way, and it seems as though they’ll be exploring, at least in part, the route Parker takes in becoming Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.It’ll be a trial by fire, of course, as he faces off against one of his most formidable adversaries: Michael Keaton’s the Vulture. This will be the first time the villain has been on the big screen, and Holland is certain it will be an amazing experience:
“I first saw it in the concept art room and I was mind blown. You haven’t seen anything yet. You haven’t seen anything yet. It is so cool. The suit allows us to incorporate so much more physical presence from the Vulture. He’s a real formidable villain. It’s going to be badass when you see it in full effect.”
That’s good news for fans, but unsurprising given Marvel Studios’ history. They’ve never skimped on their biggest bads, so it makes sense that they’d portray Vulture in a way that will amaze long-term fans of both the comics and MCU.
