Amidst all the characters in this moving novel of loss, love, and renewal, the two who grieve hardest have the most to discover. Tilda Carr has lost the love of her life―her husband, Harold―after forty years of marriage, while her granddaughter and namesake, Tilly, has lost her grandfather and best friend. Together they will embark on a journey of discovery in this intergenerational story of friends, family, and lovers―and learn that there is always hope for new beginnings.

Tilda’s Promise by Jean P. Moore

I had seen this book on social media and was immediately drawn to the story line. I had never heard of the author, but no worries, thanks to NetGalley, I was able to request a digital copy of Tilda’s Promise to read and review.  I always love books involving strong female characters, so I was thrilled when I was approved.

The story begins when Tilda Carr wakes up one morning to find her husband of forty years, Harold, has died in their bed. Tilda knows she must come through her sadness and cope with this tremendous loss.  While Tilda is obviously the main character in Tilda’s Promise, there are infrequent switches to her 15-year old granddaughter and namesake, Tilly’s point of view.  She is also struggling with the loss of her grandfather – he was her mentor, her hero, her best friend.

Right from the start, Tilda’s Promise engages readers by sharing Tilda’s ability to establish a beautiful and realistic warm relationship among Tilda, her daughter, Laura, and most especially, her granddaughter, Tilly. While initially, there is a lot of grief, the story slowly unfolds and shares the story of a family, their grief and how they found themselves on the other side of that grief.

I really felt that the characters were well written and believable — actually relatable to readers. The story – grief is hard for anyone, and the author’s ability to help readers see the perspectives of this family’s loss were beautiful.  Thank you Ms. Moore!
