Jelenia Gora was our last stop in Poland, before spending our final week of our 2015 summer trip in Germany.
Same procedure as usual: upon arrival, we looked for a place to eat and drink something. And we didn't have to look far this time; opposite the apartment we rented was a restaurant and cocktail bar. Lars and I enjoyed some international cuisine, a couple of shots and watched people strolling in the street. The two girls on the horses by the way distributed flyers for a circus that was in town.
The next day we took it easy. Lars and I had only one goal in mind: to go to Kudowa - Czermna and visit the famous Skull Chapel. Yes, that is right, a chapel whose interior is completely decorated with human skulls and bones. It had been on our bucket list for quite some time.
The chapel was built at the end of the 18th century and contains 3.000 skulls and bones, dug from mass graves, established after devastating cholera and pest epidemics. You have to pay a small fee to get in: only 20 -30 people are allowed in the chapel at once. It is forbidden to photograph the interior.
Anyway, back to Jelenia Gora and the same restaurant. Why change a winning team?
And now a funny detail about myself. Although I travel a lot and am open-minded, I am hopelessly patriotic. So, although I feel at home everywhere, I am so proud to be Belgian.
Back to business... We visited the market square, which is surrounded by tall, colourful buildings. Jelenia Gora was lucky enough to escape the horrors of World War II and did not need to do a lot of rebuilding.
We sat in one of the cafés, enjoyed a couple of beers and listened to some live music. And that was it; the Polish chapter was finished.
