To go back or not to go back to the Brocken, that was the question...
The Brocken is the highest mountain in the region of the Harz and North-Germany. Lars and I had had discussions in the past about visiting this mountain: it is a very touristic destination (not the aim of this website) and going there by steam train (by far the most pleasant way) is not cheap (we are low-budget travellers). But during a very cold winter day some years ago, we finally did go there. You can read about all this "prehistory" - with a lot of practical information - here.
And on a sunny morning in August 2015, we were at the train station again... The problem is that Lars and I cannot remember where we departed, but it could be Wernigerode. But no matter where you start your train journey, a ticket to the top of the Brocken costs the same. A return ticket will set you back about 32 euros a person.
I took some shots inside the train as well. As you can see, canine companions are allowed. To be honest, I am not sure if you have to pay extra for them.
I had the brilliant idea to take pictures during the drive as well. Not the best shots I have ever produced, I have to admit.
And then we were back on the top of the mountain. And we were certainly not alone! In order to cater for all these tourists, there are restaurants and even a hotel.
There are also a weather station and various television and radio submitters on top of the Brocken. By the way, the altitude is about 1.125 metres.
This time there was no mist nor snow, so Lars and I could really admire the magnificent views.
Was is it worth its money? This time I would say yes. In our opinion, a visit to the top of the Brocken is to be recommended in the summer months; it can be cloudy, but even then, you can see a lot more! By the way, it can be quite windy on top of the Brocken, even during summer, so a light jacket is no luxury.
