Things You Haven’t Thought About Regarding Moving – But Need To

By: Lisa Swan

Summer is a time of year in which many people get ready to move. Whether you one of the people who are going to move for college-related reasons, or you are looking for a fresh start, or you are moving in the summer so that you did not disrupt your children’s schooling during the year, you may be bewildered on what to do next, and what you need to know about moving. Whether you need New York movers, Florida moving services, or are looking into moving in another state, here are some tips:

Get started now in getting rid of things

Do you want to be like one of the hapless people on the TV show Hoarders, not wanting to get rid of everything, no matter how trivial? Do you want to be unpacking boxes for years after your move? Or paying moving charges for things you do not need?  Of course not. So don’t wait until your move happens until you get rid of anything. Start now. That means that you should stop shopping as a recreational activity. You would be surprised at how much you accumulate.

Organizer Peter Walsh has a rule when it comes to accumulating more items – he says that you should get rid of one thing for every new thing you bring in. You may want to amend that list to get rid of two or three items for everything you bring in. Or better yet, simply start donating and selling items you don’t need any more prior to your move.

On his website, Walsh has a list of places you can donate things to other than the usual – there are a variety of specific non-profits that may happily take your items. Check it out to see what you can re-purpose.

Decide whether you need to hire a mover – or do it yourself

moving tips

You may think that you can save a good amount of money by doing it yourself when it comes to moving, but you may not have thought about the hidden costs of moving by yourself. What if you break precious heirlooms? Or end up not being able to bring items you would love to keep, simply because you cannot carry them yourself? What if you pay your friends in pizza and beer to help you move, but one of them wrenches his back and misses work for a week because of it? Do you have insurance to cover his or her health problems? Even boxes can be more expensive than you think. And what about how much time you may spend moving everything yourself? These days, employees find it harder and harder to get away from work, and doing it yourself  when it comes to moving can cost you time and energy at your job.

This is why people hire New York movers, California moving companies, or moving experts in whatever state they live in. Such movers can help you get your items to your new location in a professional way with a minimum of hassles. You may want to consider hiring such movers for your situation.
