I'm sure I am going against book review etiquette when I admit I am only 36% way through this book, so you may have to bear that in mind whilst reading this. With that being said, what I have read so far I have enjoyed.
This book is brought to us by comedian and actor Amy Poehler known best for her role in Saturday Night Live and Parks and Recreation. I have seen a few people refer to this book as a "non-book" meaning that it has few qualities of it's typical form as it doesn't follow a central narrative or argument. It's comprised of memiorish chapters of retellings of her personal and career journeys up until where she is now. This book has lots of filler, blank pages, old photographs and snippets from scripts with guest chapters from cast mate Seth Meyers. Hats off to Amy for writing this book with honestly as she kicks it off by talking about how writing is often glamourised, and to be perfectly real she found writing this book a complete chore at times. However, intertwined throughout the chapters there are several self-empowerment lessons to learn which are uplifting and have stuck with me. Amy talks about the phrase "good for you, not for me" which I think is a really powerful message. Next time you don't agree with someones views or opinions, instead of letting them bother you simply consider that phrase. It's an incredibly powerful tool.
Overall, I have found this book interesting so far however as someone who has never watched Parks and Recreation and I'm not on the same wave level as SNL, at times I have felt a little out of my depth. If you are an Amy Poehler fan then I highly recommend this book. To be honest, even if you aren't I would still give it a go because it's interesting to hear all about the climate of exceptional creative freedom she promotes.
