The Reading List: The Final Empire (Mistborn Book 1) by Brandon SandersonAn epic fantasy, a bestseller in the US and an international sensation. Big claims plastered across of the back of the book which certainly do set the bar high. But having finished this tale, I can wholeheartedly see why.
Released in 2006 it is the first part of the Mistborn trilogy from Brandon Sanderson. The story is a tale an oppressed community known as the Skaa and their revolt against a seemingly invincible God known as the Lord Ruler. This powerful and dark ruler has ruled the world for over a thousand years and has Inquisitors and Obligators at his command. The Skaa community have become so depressed and low over time that they no longer fight back...until that is, they meet Kelsier (a mistborn) who along with his crew begin a rebellion. What makes this story so different from anything I have read before is the world in which it is set and the use of Allomancy. An Allomancer is able to burn and metabolise a range of metals in return for magical powers. A person who is only able to burn one of the metals is known as a Misting, however anyone capable of burning more than one metal, naturally, is capable of burning all of them; these people are known as Mistborn.
One of the main characters is Vin, a young female who begins on the streets but life quickly changes for her as she starts to discover what she is capable of. When I first started the book, I was originally put off by the character as I thought it was going to be a YA novel however I really grew to love Vin and she really reminds me of Ayra in Game Of Thrones. Throughout the story the characters build and a tight knit crew forms which I am hoping I get to explore some of these characters a little more in the second book.
In conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading fantasy or someone who is after something a little different. It is really easy to follow and a great way introduction fantasy. Sanderson explains the world and magic system in a way that is easy to digest (...sorry). Once I had finished this book I was straight onto the second one as I need to know more!
