The Puppet Theatre

Little Mr A has been on at me for a couple of weeks to make him a puppet theatre. I promised that we would make it a half term project. Come Monday he could wait no longer! I had wanted to stretch it out over the whole week, however, Little Mr A was so eager and excited it was all done in a day!

On Friday we had been for a trip to Hobbycraft to buy some supplies including foam sheets and googly eyes!

Before making the theatre we sat down to make some puppets. We have been saving up lots of toilet roll tubes for craft activities so decided to cover these in the foam sheets with some double sided tape and then glue on eyes and decorations.

Little Mr A decided he wanted to make a family of aliens (he has been learning about space at school!) together with the obligatory dinosaur, a Yeti (obviously!) and a Rugby Player. A nice random collection of characters to put on a show with!

I stole a couple of tubes away to make my own and decided on a Princess and a Wizard - I am ridiculously proud of how they turned out and am quite loathe to give them to Little Mr A to play with!

Once we had finished the puppets next came the tricky task of creating some kind of theatre. I found a big box in the garage, chopped it up and stuck it back together with Duck Tape to form the base for the theatre. I did think about painting it, however, knew Little Mr A would be too impatient to leave it to dry, so we covered it in corrugated cardboard. I wasn't sure how it would turn out but I was quite impressed with the finished effect.

Once it was all stuck together and covered I popped on the two pieces of felt Little Mr A had chosen for the curtains and made a sign for the front.

Once finished Little Mr A took it up to his room and spent a good half an hour playing with it and creating a show. I'm not sure how much play it will hold up to but it was great fun to make and I am hoping Little Mr A gets a lot of enjoyment from it. I'm sure the puppets will be added to as his interests grow and change!
