The chilling new psychological thriller from the #1 bestselling author of I Am Watching You.
It was their darkest secret. Three schoolgirls made a promise – to take the horrible truth of what they did to the grave.
Thirty years later, Beth and Sally have tried to put the trauma behind them. Though Carol has distanced herself from her former friends, the three are adamant that the truth must never come to light, even if the memory still haunts them.
But when some shocking news threatens to unearth their dark secret, Beth enlists the help of private investigator Matthew Hill to help her and Sally reconnect with estranged Carol – before the terrible act they committed as teenagers is revealed.
Beth wishes she could take back the vow they made.
But somebody is watching and will stop at nothing to ensure the secret stays buried. Now, with her beloved family in peril, can Beth still keep the promise?
When I read the synopsis of this story, I was immediately intrigued and knew I just had to read this book. I hadn’t heard of author, Teresa Driscoll, but when I did a little research I learned that she has written quite a few other psychological thrillers. After reading today’s book, The Promise, it became clear this is another author I’ll want to follow!
“They sit very still in this room full of blood and sorrow – girls whose pulses burst in their veins and boom inside their ears. Their heads. Somewhere a clock ticks. A bird calls….
Three girls. One dead.”
Beth, Sally, and Carol met at a Catholic boarding school and became the best of friends. When the girls are 14, something horrible happens and they make a promise to each other never to tell anyone what happened or the parts that they each played in this traumatic event. The memory of this event and the secrets kept from it torture these girls into adulthood. When the now-38 year old women learn that the old boarding school grounds are going to be torn down, their secret may possibly be revealed.
Beth is happily married to her husband, Adam and is terrified she could lose him and their two sons if anyone discovers her secret. Then there’s Sally, who started drinking many years ago trying to forget her part in what happened. Carol has seemingly dropped off the face of the earth ceasing any contact with her own mom, or Beth or Sally. Beth is desperate to locate Carol so they can make plans about their secret or free themselves from their promise. They hire Matthew, a private investigator, to help locate Carol before the building is torn down.
The Promise is told predominantly through Beth’s perspective, both the past and the present tense. Once the plot of the story of The Promise is established, Matthew and Carol’s present day perspectives are interspersed too. There are some unexpected twists that keep readers in suspense and fully locked in and absorbed in this story.
