The New Wilderness – Ancient Woodland

By Ingridd @cosytraveler

This is the real highlight of the walk. Once you have crossed the bridge, you find yourself in an ancient woodland.

Most forests have been planted by human beings. This is not the case with ancient woodland. So, where there was once a swamp at the Oostvaardersplassen, nature took control of it. Trees appeared and the nature park still exists without any human intervention. This means that for example dead trees are not removed. Lots of trees are also covered with mosses and fungi, which means that the air is very pure here.

There are not so many ancient woodlands left in Europe. Some of them had to make way for agriculture; in others, humans decided to introduce other trees and plants. So, this was really a very special place.
