The Memorial

By Ingridd @cosytraveler

Just outside the center of Srebrenica, you’ll find the Memorial:

The Srebrenica Genocide Memorial, officially known as the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial and Cemetery for the Victims of the 1995 Genocide,[1] is the memorial-cemetery complex in Srebrenica set up to honor the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide. The victims were mostly males, Bosnian Muslims and Croats.[2]

As of July 2012, 6,838 genocide victims have been identified through DNA analysis of body parts recovered from mass graves[3] and 6,066 (July 2013) victims have been buried. (source: Wikipedia)

I don’t know what was more sad: seeing the ruins or this memorial. It’s all so heartbreaking… When you see that boys as young as 13 years old were murdered… That all male members of the same family were killed… It’s hard to call this one of the highlights of the year, but it’s certainly a place we will never forget.
