The highly acclaimed author of Watching Edie returns with a new novel of dark psychological suspense that explores how those closest to us have the most to hide…

When Clara’s boyfriend, Luke, disappears, everyone believes that he’s left her, but Clara thinks she knows the truth. Recent evidence suggests that Luke had a stalker, and Clara worries that he’s been kidnapped. Then Luke’s older sister, Emma, who vanished twenty years ago, suddenly reappears.

Emma wants to help Clara with her search for Luke, but she refuses to talk about what happened–even though it nearly destroyed her family when she vanished. And the deeper Clara digs into Luke’s mysterious disappearance, the more convinced she is that the two incidents are connected.

I had never heard of Camilla Way, and I didn’t know anything about this book, but when I saw it available for request on NetGalley, I knew it would be right in line with my new thriller addiction just based on the title. Right away, I learned the author is not new to the industry, having published several other books, so maybe I need to go back and add a few to my new TBR list!

The Lies We Told by Camilla Way is told from two main points of view with one being in the present time and one in the past.  The story is definitely a thriller, adding layers and layers of secrets and lies while the reader turns page after page to discover the truth.

In the timeline of the past, Beth is a young mother who is struggling and is at her wit’s end dealing with her young daughter, Hannah. Hannah is unpredictable and nothing like other children.  Hannah is a dark and disturbing child and Beth feels afraid of what her daughter might be capable of doing next.

Then in the present timeline, Clara is worried when her boyfriend, Luke fails to come home from work one night.  Clara discovers Luke may have a stalker and finds threatening emails to him, which she then gets fearful coupled with a recent break-in.  Clara contacts all their friends and looks everywhere for him.  She knows something is wrong but it seem the longer Luke is gone, the less Clara feels like she ever really knew him.

Clara struggles with her discoveries of Luke’s past relationships and his not-so-perfect behavior.  Beth struggles with her daughter’s anti-social behavior and the fact that she appears not to care about anyone or anything and acts out physically causing Beth to love and fear her at the same time.

The Lies We Told has so many misdirections and dead-ends that you’ll be guessing from beginning to end. The story captivated me from the start and kept me locked in until the end. Both Beth and Clara’s stories had great progression and the author transitioned smoothly between both women’s stories throughout the book.  The Lies We Told was an addictively fast-paced and riveting book that will keep you glued to the pages.

The book will keep you guessing until the very end, and if you are able to figure it out, then my congrats to you! If you enjoy psychological thrillers, the twists and turns in this story are perfect for you!
