During the Easter vacation, Lars and I had been to Hungary as well. A couple of times, we had driven along the Neusiedler See (Lake Neusiedl). We were very eager to visit it, but we decided it would be better during summer.
Lake Neusiedl is one of the largest lakes in Europe. Only a small part is located in Hungary, the rest is in Austria. The lake is almost completely surrounded by reeds and harbors a lot of wildlife. We drove to one of the villages near the lake, called Fertőrákos:

There were signs towards the lake and we followed them eagerly. I was already getting my camera ready, but our enthusiasm disappeared as soon as we arrived at the waterside. Apparently, you had to pay an entrance and/or parking fee. And we didn’t have any Hungarian money on us. They didn’t accept bank cards nor credit cards.
We crossed the border, hoping the situation would be different in Austria. And it was. But not in a positive way… The fees were higher and there were a lot of tourists. And we simply couldn’t get rid of the car. The more we looked for a way to be nearer to the lake, the more inaccessible it seemed to be.
After 50 kilometers Lars and I gave up. We returned to Fertőrákos and discovered a canal, that went to the lake. A lot of people were sitting along the water, sunbathing, resting, having a snack. We did the same. At least we did see some water…
