Today’s submission is #6 which means I’m almost 1/10 of the way through the challenge. Not quite…but almost! It does, however, mean that I’ve been submitting consistently for 6 weeks. That by itself is an accomplishment I’m proud of. And if I can make it another 6 weeks, well…I’ll be at 12. Which doesn’t seem like a lot.
My 6th submission was to the Diane Finch Literary Agency, again, based in New York, New York. Submissions aside I’d highly recommend following their blog. While some of the posts detail ongoing book deals and publicity they also publish a lot of things for currently submitting writer’s. The posts I found the most helpful were “What to Expect from your Literary Agent” and “Literary Agent vs. Lawyer”. So if you’re onto that stage of submitting your work and are trying to decide where to submit your work and if an agent is important, these two posts give you a lot of information to help you with your decision.
My personal preference, as far as publishing goes, leans a little more towards small presses. You aren’t going to make a lot of money, but I like the idea of being able to work with the people who are publishing my book without a mediator and knowing that the press has time to spend with my book rather than a large press that deals with hundreds. Of course, it’s not the way to be a “professional, one job only” type writer. But I don’t have a problem with that. Of course it also means you’re left to decipher the contracts on you own. And that’s a little scary.
So where are you submitting your writing to this week?
