The Fortified Churches in Transylvania

By Ingridd @cosytraveler

The day after our adventure in the mountains, Lars and I decided to take it a bit easy. Less kilometers and less adrenaline. So we started our day with a visit to two of the fortified churches in Transylvania. But what exactly are these?

In the 12th century German settlers came to this area. In order to defend themselves from Ottoman and Tatar attacks, they either built fortified towns or fortified churches. In the last case it means they built a wall around the church, with watchtowers and storehouses. Some of these constructions still exist and have been added to the Unesco World Heritage List.

One of these villages is Crit (part of Viscri):

It is such a small place, that you won’t have any troubles finding the church. The building is being renovated at the moment, but you can still have a look inside. We loved the blue and sober interior, which reminded of some Danish churches!
