The “Eyes” Have It – Admitting It Is the First Step

By Bren @Virtual_Bren

The older I get, the more I continue to force myself to embrace the inevitable changes. Let’s face it, there’s really nothing we can do to Stop the aging process so why not accept it?

The Eyes Have It

The “Eyes” Have It

I have been wearing glasses/contact lenses since in my 20’s. Apparently, my eyes decided a long time ago that they didn’t want to see quite as far as I’d like them. Yes, I am nearsighted. Not greatly, but I do need corrective lenses to help me, especially with my driving.

I have been seeing the same eye doctor for many years. Quite frankly, I love my eye doctor and call him Dr. Sexay. Is he absolutely sexy? I don’t know if you’d agree, but he has the best smile and a fabulous sense of humor. PLUS he laughs at my jokes! I find that very sexy in a man. :)

Since I turned 40, over 7 years ago, Dr. Sexay has been trying to get me into bifocals. He said most people will start to need them around that age. Happily, I’ve been able to fight off needing them up until this past year.

I Succumbed

This year, I finally admitted to Dr. Sexay that I needed a bit of help and had purchased “readers” aka reading glasses. Of course, I chose a few stylish ones so I could keep a pair wherever I would need them most.

  • A pair in my purse (along with my hubs)
  • A pair at work
  • A pair in the den

Dr. Sexay has his Own Ideas

I think he was actually overjoyed at me admitting I finally needing help reading up close! I told him I could always make the font on my cell phone larger, but that doesn’t help when you’re trying to read something other than what is on your phone.

Dr. Sexay says these contact lenses are the latest craze with “old farts” (those needing help with reading up close). He swore I would like them. I questioned how the heck these things work! It’s one lens but has 2 prescriptions in it? The thought freaked me out! He explained the benefits of wearing these:

  • Vision Correction (no “readers”)
  • UV protection (coolness!)

He got me a pair to try on and tested my vision. We walked to the front of the building and looked outside.

How far can you see?

I can read the Mosquito Center sign.

Then back to the exam room to see how well the lenses helped my reading of fine print. Yes! This are pretty cool!

Here’s 9 pairs to try out. If you like them, we can order more.

Sure, no problem.

I left the eye center and had no issues driving home. I figured the true test would be using these at work the following day, as this is where I have the majority of my “reading” issues.

First full trial day

One of the first things I recognized on my way driving to work was my distance vision had been affected. Things that I could normally read/see in the distance was blurry.

At the office, I didn’t have any issues reading smaller print and rather liked the fact that I didn’t have to carry my “readers” everywhere I went.

On the drive home, my distance seeing really bothered me. I am very proactive when I drive and like to scan ahead or to the sides. The lenses hindered that.

The weigh in

After carefully considering, based on my full day trial, I decided that I did not care for these lenses. They are nice for reading, but I really want to keep my distance vision. Plus, these lenses cost double what my normal cost. So I decided against them. I convinced myself that these lenses would not work for me.

I guess there could be worse things than wear readers at 47

My hubs is due for his annual exam this month and is going to consider trying out the Acuvue Moist Multifocal lenses. I don’t believe he is going to care for these either as he drives for a living. But I could be wrong.

But if so many people are wearing these new lenses are they just not as concerned about their ability to see far as I am?

What would you do?

If you are one who wears glasses or contacts and need help with reading, what do you do? Do you have glasses with bifocals in them? Do you wear glasses or contacts and carry around “readers” like me? How willing would you be to try Multifocal Contact Lenses or have you already?

I’d love to hear from you.
