When it comes to events and partying in general, the lighting in the venue is just as important as the music and the decor. A great lighting system will truly light up your event so it’s important that if you are the event coordinator or planner you know what you’re working with.
There are currently many different types and styles of lights available to be used for events so it’s vital that you are familiar with each. That’s why we have created the essential guide to lighting effects.
Strobe
Strobe lights are very bright lights that flash rapidly. Usually a single or dual white light, these lights have a dramatic effect when used in complete darkness. Strobe lights are largely associated with raves and night clubs due to the fact that they can be programmed to flash as fast as ten times a second-the perfect accompaniment for high BPM music.
Strobe lights are typically mounted on the ceiling or on high walls so that the whole room enjoys the lighting effect.

Laser
Laser lights project beams of lights in all directions. They can blink, flash and twist to make an array of interesting lighting effects. Lasers can hang from the ceiling for maximum effect or be situated on a tripod for lighting concentrated areas. Many laser lights can be setup so that they work in conjunction with the music which is why they are so popular at music events such as gigs, festivals and raves.
Scanner
Scanners are similar to laser lights but are typically much more affordable to purchase. Scanners vary greatly in shape and style but they are usually large boxes with multiple rows of different colored lights. These lights can be pointed in a multitude of directions and can be synchronized to the music, sound activated or move to a set pattern.
Moonflower
The moonflower light is an LED (Light Emitting Diode) light that reflects multicolored beams off of mirrors to create fantastic lighting effects and designs on the floors and walls of venues. The mirrors within Moonflower lights rotate so that the designs alter and move as the light reflects from them differently. An integrated microphone or sensor is often used to detect the sound and change the rotation along with the beat of the music.
PAR
PAR (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) lights are renowned for shining an intense oval-shaped beam of light. PAR lights are placed inside a cylindrical shape like a can. The end of the PAR has a flat lens that allows the light to pass through. PAR lights are typical white in color as a filter is placed in front of the light instead. Unlike most other lights, PAR lights present a solid color over the whole room rather than providing focused light effects.
