The above program emphasizes mental health topics, crisis resolution skills and de-escalation training. The officers are exposed to mental health facilities and interact with consumers.

The lectures include:- Clinical issues related to mental illnesses, medication and its side effects, alcohol and drug assessment, developmental disabilities, family perspectives as well as those of consumers (people with a mental illness), suicide prevention, mental health diversity, equipment orientation, personality disorders, legal aspects of officer liability, and community resources.

Recognizing and honoring CIT Officers provides a sense of accomplishment and ownership toward the program. It also gives officers an incentive to continue in the line of work.
