Three-Time RITA Award Winner Delivers Another Heart-Stopping ThrillerAfter a disastrous Middle East mission ends his six-year Army Ranger career, Finn McGregor needs some downtime. A peaceful month in the woods sounds like the perfect way to decompress. But peace isn’t on the agenda once he crosses paths with publishing executive Dana Lewis, a neighbor who is nursing wounds of her own. Someone seems bent on disrupting her stay in the lakeside cabin she inherited from her grandfather.

As Finn and Dana work together to discover who is behind the disquieting pranks, the incidents begin to take on a menacing tone. And when it becomes apparent Dana’s foe may have deadly intent, Finn finds himself back in the thick of the action–ready or not.Bestselling author Irene Hannon draws readers into a web of psychological suspense where danger lurks in dark corners . . . and keeps them captive until the very last page.

I learn of title available for review from the Baker Publishing Group because I’m a blogger group called Revell Reads.  For October, one of the offerings was a book by author, Irene Hannon called Tangled Webs.  The cover looked interesting and the story seemed even more interesting, so I signed up to read it.

Tangled Webs is book #3 in a series of three books. I had not read the first two books in the Men of Valor series, but was able to quickly figure out what was going on with the characters and the plot of the series, so I’d say this book could serve as a standalone. Me personally, though, I wish I would have read the first two books so that I was completely “invested” in the other characters, like Finn’s older brothers, Mac and Lance.

Finn, the youngest of the three McGregor brothers, and he’s a former Army Ranger. Finn is trying to find his place after leaving military service and needs to get away, so he goes to his brother’s friend’s place in a remote area of the woods of the Mark Twain Forest region of Missouri. In the nighttime, he hear’s a woman’s scream so he rushes towards it, kicks the door open and finds an attractive woman in the middle of having a nightmare in her sleep.

And there it begins. Finn decides isolation is not exactly what he wants as he and the woman, Dana Lewis, begin spend time together. Dana is there in the cabin she inherited from her grandfather because she too is trying to get away – she’s a free-lance editor escaping the “rat race” of New York. (I felt that Ms. Hannon wrote a great “backstory” for Dana too.) The romantic interest between Dana and Finn balances well with the suspense of the story, which results in some heart-stirring scenes.

Someone is painting graffiti on Dana’s dock, putting holes in her row boat, and setting her shed on fire. This threat seems to become more serious and they do not realize what is happening on the other side of the lake to put them in danger. Because I don’t write spoilers, I’m not going to be able to give you much more of the plot here.  You’ll have to read the book for yourself if you like suspenses with a hint of romance.

The category “Christian fiction suspense” accurately describes this story.  This was a great book with a great story, and I’m looking forward to going back to read books 1 and 2 to fill in the gaps.  Tangled Webs is a very believable book exploring the choices good people make during during times of desperation. I thought Ms. Hannon did a great job with the suspense and mystery angle of this story. While the character development was great, Tangled Webs is one of those books where we know who the “bad guys” are, but there’s nothing wrong with having that knowledge all along.
