Sippin' begins with a a deep, crooning synth that brings with it a sharp snare and some pitch shifted vocals that are all indicative of an ambient, Bevan-esque piece of music. However, extra snares and hits layer up to produce a march into a new tempo and a loop that squeaks and rides the drums much in the same way that basically all Mad Decent releases & general Moombahton does these days.The real genius of Sippin' lies in the drop though, as the half step of the bass kick which breaks in between various loops turns the song from easy listening into something which brokers the appreciation of the dance-floor. Formulated like trap but, without the horrendous vocals of an average female singer or angry shouts from a rapper who probably lives in his mother's house - Sweater Beat's new single definitely alleviates itself from any single genre. We would consider it premature to suggest that Ambient-Trap is even a real thing, much in the same way one remix from Flume does not create an opening for whatever on earth 'Orchestral Crunkwave' is, but the fact remains that Antonio Cuna has managed to keep his style as fresh as ever without compromising the slickness he has built his well earned reputation on. As aforementioned, averaging 45,000 plays for a new release and stacking up some 25,000 followers on Soundcloud means Cuna is certainly not passing under the radar, but by the same token can not be considered a household name yet. In our eyes he has struck the perfect balance: revered by those in the know, yet untainted by the inevitable degradation that the race for the top 40 can bring - long may this continue.
