Sugar In Cereal & Making Granola

By Brightowngirl @Brightowngirl
Cereal is great for a quick and easy breakfast but if you look at the ingredients lists on cereal boxes most of them are full of sugar.
One of the big things I am trying to do with my diet is to cut down on sugar and cereal is one place I have started to research more into.
I often eat Porridge Oats as they don't have any in at all and as much as I can spice it up with adding fruits and cinnamon somtimes it can get a bit boring.
I love granola but after standing and looking at all the packets in Tesco and Sainsburys most shop bought Granola has at least 10 -15 grams of sugar in for one portion!!
To compare, a funsize Cadburys Crunchie has 11grams of sugar in. Even though granola will have more nutritional value, sugar wise you may as well eat a small bar of chocolate for breakfast.
With knowing this I decided to look into making my own granola and discovered it was so simple and so I thought I would share it with you as I hope some of you would find it interesting.
Sugar In Cereal & Making Granola
Ingredients
- 150g Oats
- 75g Quinoa
- 25g Chopped Almonds
- 25g Peacan Nuts
- 25g Walnuts
- 2tbsp Melted Cocnut Oil
- 3tsp Honey/Agave Syrup
- 1tsp Cinnamon
Mix the oats, quinoa and nuts together.
Melt the coconut oil and Cinnamon then stir in.
Add the honey a tsp at a time a thourghly mix it all together.
Once the mixture is coated with the honey and coconut oil poor onto a try and spread it evenly out. Put it in the oven at 150 degrees for 10 mintues.
After the 10 Minutes, give it a stir and then cook for another 5/10 minutes. Keep an eye on at this point as I burnt mine a little.
Once done leave it to cool and its ready to eat or you can add raisins and other dried fruit if you like.
This amount should equal to about 6/7 portions and if it is kept in a air tight container willl last up to two weeks.
One Portion (40g) is about 200 Calories, has 9g fat (which is quite high due to the nuts) and 3g Sugar.
I really enjoy eating this and it would be great to hear if any of you try the recipe out. Have you made granola before, do you have a recipe to share? I am always looking for new things to cook.
As I have said before I am still learning about nutrition and leading a more healthy lifestyle so any feedback and tips are always appriciated.
