Straight Talking

By Alip @alisonpikeGD

Brrr… baby it’s cold outside!

During the decade or so that I was designing gardens it was all about structure and there is no other time of the year when this is becomes more apparent than now.  The garden is laid bare and that oh so important structure is what you are left with.  There are no billowing herbaceous perennials to hide behind, the edges of paths once again become exposed and the ragged edges of lawns are clear for all to see.

Most of us have lawns in our gardens and for many of us this will provide more greenery than anything else throughout these coming winter months.  So if there is one small job you can do to make a big impact it is re-edging your lawn.  It sounds simple and it is, all you need is string and a half moon cutter.

Simply tie your string to give you a nice straight line and follow this with your half moon cutter.  Then once you have cleared away the scraggy turf edges you are left with a crisp clean line that defines your lawn.  I then create a channel so there is a clear drop down from the lawn to the border level that can then be gently sloped back up through the border.  By creating this clean edge you reduce the amount of weed and especially couch grass that can creep into your borders.  Job done!  Now go inside, make a cuppa and warm up.
