After using a carpet for a longer period of time they may get damaged. Sometimes you may discover that some portions of your carpet have been torn. Due to improper maintenance damage may occur. Sometimes due to heavy furniture movements holes may appear on the carpet’s surface. But those situations need proper attention and care. The best solution is to opt for carpet patching when these kind of situation occurs.
Some of the steps that have to be followed while doing carpet patching are discussed below:
- Remove baseboards: If the room has a baseboard molding and the patch has to be applied against the wall then, it is necessary to remove the baseboard. Reinstall the baseboard after finishing the carpet patching.
- Attach the tack strip: You have to pull down the tack strip if the patching area is leaning against the wall. These tack strips are provided with a hook which holds the carpet. Try to nail it ¼” away from the baseboard or wall.
- Cut the carpet pads: In order to fit the area that has to be patched, cut out a piece from the foam carpet pads. The pad should be cut in such a way so that it fits inside and on the top of the tack strip.
- Try to determine the nap direction: Check out whether the carpet nap is following the exact direction of the existing carpet. Run your hand over it to make sure about the fact.
- Cut out the patch: After determining the nap direction, use a knife to cut out a piece to fit into the area to be patched.
- Apply the seam tape: Apply the seam tape just beneath the seam and press it using a carpet iron. To press the carpet down into the seam tape, use a carpet tractor to reinforce the bond.
- Trim the excess: Lastly use a carpet trimming tool to trim the excess from the carpet edges.
