Little Mr A has been sent some very spooky books this week from Top That Publishing, just in time for Halloween!
First up is How to Draw 101 Spooky Things. This is a great book giving you easy step by step instructions on how to draw lots of spooky things such as a Pumpkin, Bogey Monster, Owls, Spiders and much, much more.
I have often picked up these books before but didn’t think Little Mr A was quite ready. Since the start of the school year he has taken to drawing more and is actually getting quite good! Once I had shown him how to use this book properly he has sat down and spent quite some time drawing a few of the pictures out of it.
I am really impressed with how easy this book is to use. Each drawing is split into 6 easy to follow boxes, each box adding more and more to the picture until you are left with the final drawing. It was so easy even I managed to draw an OK picture!
I think Little Mr A is the perfect age for the book. He is starting to take a real interest in Halloween now and is quite happy to sit and follow instructions. I think younger children may well enjoy this book to as a colouring book.
I will certainly be keeping a look out for the other books in this range as Little Mr A really enjoyed it and I think they will help to improve his drawing skills.
Next up is The Return of the Jabberwock written by Oakley Graham and illustrated by David Neale. The book is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s famous poem and is about a brave little boy who sets off on an adventure to find the Jabberwock, just like his grandfather before him. Along the way he meets all sorts of mysterious creatures in Tulgey Wood.
Little Mr A sat and read this book to himself when he got home from school and I could hear from his expressions how much he enjoyed the book! He loved encountering all of the creatures and got really excited in places!
I think this is a great book for reading with your children, particularly at Halloween as you can snuggle under a blanket and really set the scene for a scary story! The illustrations are also really great, there is not too much going on on each page to be distracted by, however, the illustrations really help to tell the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good spooky story!
