Felicia Lyons is a character who mothers can identify with and laugh along with. You can’t help but cheer for her in Johnson’s engaging and well-written novel.
This book started pretty strong right out of the gate. I felt like the main character, a young mother named Felicia, was someone that I might actually know. Felicia – aka “Foxy” – struggles every day to be a good mother and wife – she gets the kids up, gets them fed, washed, dressed and ready for school only to turn around do it all over again when they get home from school.
There’s a mystery behind Foxy’s past that is revealed gradually, keeping readers moving through the pages. Someone from Felicia’s past re-emerges and she then finds herself confronted with secrets that she had buried long ago, and they now threaten every aspect of her previously stable life. She never seems to learn her lesson and just adds bad decision after bad decision making me think she couldn’t be that dumb. Finally at his breaking point, her husband announces that the situation has affected their relationship to the point of break. Luckily, they spend some time apart and find their way back to each other.
This book takes readers through Felicia’s life and shows us how people will go to great lengths to make a fresh start in their life, even if that requires they lose their former selves in the process. The bottom line to every person is this: “No matter where you go, there you are”. You can never get away from who you are and what you have walked through in your life.
I have never read anything from Sadeqa Johnson before, and I was hesitant to read this book, but the cover and description drew me in. The book didn’t turn out to be what I expected, but I did enjoy the story after all.
