School Days, School Days . . .

School Days, School Days . . .
Tidying up a cabinet of family mementos, I spent a little time looking at this picture. It's a group of students in front of a one-room school in China, Alabama -- in the early years of the last century.

That's my paternal grandfather, Victor Huborn Northcutt, in the middle of the back row. He was born in 1892 -- I don't know how old he is in this picture. I do know that he finished the eighth grade . . . and sometime later took a course in a business college and went on to a distinguished career in banking.

I'm guessing this is the teacher -- Miss Corina Belle Morris? Monrow?

But it's hard to be sure -- she could be one of these two. Back then, if you'd passed eighth grade, you could teach eighth grade -- and all those below it. Teachers could even be younger than their students.

I love the pinafores and ruffles on the younger girls.

There's even a barefoot boy with attitude!
