During the attacks of the Turks and Tatars, the local population not only sought refuge in the fortified churches, but also in castles. Like for example Rupea Castle, one of the oldest monuments in Transylvania:

You have to pay a small entrance fee, in Romanian money. We didn’t have any and asked permission to enter for a couple minutes, so that we could take some pictures. And guess what? We could use as much time as we wanted, so we visited the place for free.
One word of advice. If you visit the castle during a hot day, bring enough water with you. The building is located on a high, steep hill, so there is a lot of climbing to do. The reward? A very beautiful view!
