Review + Stream \\ Cut Copy – Free Your Mind

This is Cut Copy’s fourth album release, and the simple yet psychedelic album cover gives you an inkling of what the Melbourne trio have been up to. Better yet, you can follow the links at the bottom of the page to stream the album!

Some of you are old enough to remember the Hacienda, Paul Oakenfold’s club night and the explosion of acid house in the late 80’s. For those who have no idea what any of that means, this album will give you a taste.

The self-titled track is full of euphoric pianos and synths, laced with inspirational lyrics such as “you got to reach the sky / if you want your life to shine”, a little bit of an unachievable self-help mantra. This continues throughout the album with motivational words of wisdom, but it’s the music not the mottos that matter here.

It’s not all intense acid trips though; softer tunes like ‘Dark Corners and Mountain Tops’, which sounds like the journey the band were on during this record, have a happy 60’s vibe.

Titles such as ‘Take Me Higher’ and ‘Meet Me In a House of Love’ mean you can almost feel the serotonin seeping through the record. And unlike some people’s Monday mornings there is no comedown on the album; only more mellow tunes that ease you out of it.

There are hints of the Pet Shop Boys and Erasure which suggest their live shows will be a huge production that would definitely go off. It’s a nostalgic record, not a new one, but it’s really likeable.

7/10 for this trip.
