Though Magnus MacLeish and Lark MacDougall grew up on the same castle grounds, Magnus is now laird of the great house and the Isle of Kerrera. Lark is but the keeper of his bees and the woman he is hoping will provide a tincture that might help his ailing wife conceive and bear him an heir. But when his wife dies suddenly, Magnus and Lark find themselves caught up in a whirlwind of accusations, expelled from their beloved island, and sold as indentured servants across the Atlantic. Yet even when all hope seems dashed against the rocky coastline of the Virginia colony, it may be that in this New World the two of them could make a new beginning—together.

REVELL TOUR: A Bound Heart by Laura Frantz

I was invited to join the Blog Tour Team for Revell Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group for today’s post about A Bound Heart by Laura Frantz.  To be honest, I didn’t realize it was a historical story and I usually don’t prefer historical reads, so I wasn’t quite sure what I was in store for with this book.

A Bound Heart is a well-written historical novel set it Scotland, in the mid-1700’s.  The uses a very intriguing storyline to pull readers in and keep them in until they turn the last page.

The heroine of this story is Lark MacDougall.  Lark is a bee keeper and a keeper of the stillroom. She knows how to make elixirs and remedies for whatever ails you, just like her grandmother. The only thing she’s not found is the elixir to cure infertility, which is exactly what her mistress is demanding from her.

Then there’s the hero, Magnus MacLeish, who is also a laird and is actually Lark’s employer. Lark and Magnus grew up together and have known each other all of their lives. Magnus’ wife isn’t really adjusting to Kerrera, and the added trouble of not being able to have a child and heir, make things worse.  Every miscarriage she suffers causes her to lose more of her zest for living.

Everyone knows I don’t write spoilers, so I’m not going to give you the details of his/her crime, or non-crime, or justice or injustice that makes the meat of this story.  Just suffice it to say I’ve got a whole new attitude on historical fiction thanks to this author. The characters were well-written and I loved them. I found myself cheering for Lark and Magnus all along and the story was great to read.  Thank you, Ms. Frantz, for helping me get over my dislike of historical novels!

REVELL TOUR: A Bound Heart by Laura Frantz ABOUT THE AUTHOR (By the Author):  “I was born and raised in Kentucky, living first in Ashland, Mammoth Cave, Bowling Green, and then Lexington. But my heart has always been in Berea, Madison County, the place my family has resided since the 18th-century. I came to know Christ there at the age of 12, was baptized, and spent my childhood roaming through the woods and swimming in the rivers of my books.

My earliest memories are of the public library, standing in front of shelves filled with those little biographies of famous historical figures like Daniel Boone and George Washington and Sacajawea. I began scribbling stories at age 7 and thankfully never stopped. My passion then and now is history and all the wonders of past centuries.

I attended college at Denison University in Ohio and also in England, living in a manor/castle and studying the American Revolution from the British perspective. Shakespeare and 18th-century literature form the backbone of my English degree. Strangely enough, I only took one creative writing class.   It was never a desire of mine to be published. I simply love to write for the sheer joy of writing – and that was enough. But as Proverbs 16:9 says, “The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”  I hope my books bless you.”
