Because of the many miracles that happened through the intercession of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes France in 1858, it has prompted the church to institute a commemorative feast today to honor that.

In a grotto on the banks of the Gave River in Lourdes France the Virgin Mary appeared in the hollow of a rock, 18 times to a poor 14 year old girl named Marie Bernade (Saint Bernadette). On the first visit the Virgin Mary asked Bernadette to make the sign of the cross and say the rosary with her. She appeared to her a total of 18 times. On March 25th (the Feast of the Annunciation) she also appeared to her and announced, "I am the Immaculate Conception."

There began reports of cures and more miracles around the site and word spread about this holy place and people began to visit it. Lourdes France became the wolds most important site for pilgrimage and religious tourism. Six million people from around the world flock to Lourdes each year.
